Silkscreening Skully

Skull Bag

Every now and then I’m seized with an itch to silkscreen. Last week, I got it bad – so bad that I launched Operation Skully within hours of getting the itch. The results: a tote bag with a blocky skull print. Not bad! It’s amazing what you can do with old pantyhose, glue, and an embroidery hoop. Silkscreen-materials

Materials: tote bag, print-out of image, Mod Podge®, fabric paint, paintbrush, old panty hose, embroidery hoop.

Silkscreening

Skully traced onto stretched-out pantyhose.

The non-painted parts of Skully are filled in with Mod Podge® glue.

Like so. The next step, smearing a thin layer of fabric paint on the screen and letting it seep through to the tote bag, was too messy for photos, so… the final results:

silkscreening a bag

On one side: Skully with teeth.

On the reverse: Skully to forever hold his peace.

Thanks Nem! The Scully bag has gotten a lot of wear! The great thing is that you can keep your embroidery screen and use and reuse it whenever you want to silkscreen again. Oh, crafting. So cheap, so rewarding.
